Years ago, there was an oasis of innocent late night debauchery at Casa La Femme, perched then at 150 Wooster. There were elegant tented dining tables, pulsating belly dancers, and hookah smokers all wrapped around a myriad of Middle Eastern cuisine with full flavored Egyptian beer flowing into the wee hours of the morning... and then it was gone.

Thankfully, Casa La Femme has returned! Charismatic owners Medhat Ibrahim and Anastasios Hariatidas have brought back the true fun and mystery in an Egyptian-inspired late night restaurant on Charles Street. You enter the room and you’ll find a lavish bar spreading around the room, followed by a sunken dining room featuring a circular fireplace that illuminates its surroundings. Some tables are shaded with cloth, and when your sit in these harem-like positions you’ll feel like some kind of a New York Lawrence of Arabia.

Casa la Femme is loaded with late night revelers and fashionistas alike, all noshing and cramming for a view of the belly dancer that gyrates her hips around the room nightly. Medhat and Anastasi buzz around the room greeting guests and strangers. They’re soft spoken, extremely warm and likeable, and make you feel special. As for the food, it’s elevated Middle Eastern and goes perfect with their inspiring signature cocktails. Try the hummus, a chickpea spread that is seen everywhere, as well as some spiced up harissa — delicious!

You could do the “White Tent Pri-Fixe” for $55, where you choose from such exotic bites as the Salata Gargeer, a crisp baby arugula salad with watercress and mint, or the Warak Enah, traditional Egyptian grape leaves will rice, dill, parsley, and coriander. Also, try the goulash bil ghibnah, light pillowy pastries stuffed with earthy mushrooms, leeks, and fresh herbs. Casa La Femme is lively, while you're eating, glance across the room and people watch — there is a lot to see!

For crab lovers, try the crabmeat koftas, very tasty. For the main, try the firakh mashwaya, grilled sumac seasoned free-range boneless chicken served over molokhya rice, one of the better chicken dishes. The gamberi mashway was decent too, whole-grilled prawns charred to a delicate pinkish hue served over Sayadeya rice. One thing you can’t leave Casa La Femme without having is the riash mashway- tender grilled lamb chops that are melt-in-the-mouth good, and the tagine — a North-African dish named after the earthenware pot it is cooked in. Here they do it with a crabmeat stuffed white fish or fresh market vegetables.

Casa La Femme is more than just a restaurant or a late night hangout — it's truly an institution of food and lots of good time memories (for the people around for the original) whether you can remember them or not — if you can’t — fortunately you can always start new ones. It’s truly a great late night bite experience not to be missed.

Most civilized vampires frown on this behavior, putting mere mortals at ease with their policy of asking a person’s consent before taking a big gulp of the red stuff. However, that doesn’t make good copy for a first time reporter looking to impress his high society family.

So now my “master,” the centuries old, yet gorgeously well-preserved Ethan Sullivan, wants me to reconnect with my own upper class family and act as liaison between humans and vampires—and keep the more unsavory aspects of our existence out of the media. But someone doesn’t want people and vamps to play nicey-nice—someone with an ancient grudge. . more

Virtually fat-free yet creamier than any other yogurt on the market, it almost seems too, ahem, tasty and delightful to be truly low in calories. Indeed, one vintage episode of Seinfeld even revolved around that very fear, with the action centering on a thinly veiled stand-in for Tasti D-Lite and a pint of the suspect confection being surreptitiously spirited to a lab for fat testing. No doubt cynical locals are contemplating much the same trial for Tasti D-Lite's divine French Vanilla. In the meantime, mmmmm.

Best month in Miami: For me it runs from the end of January to, like, May. Blue skies, no humidity? You can't get better weather. The reason I live in Miami is because of the weather. When we're at the peak of our season here, there's no better place to be.

Best reason to live in Miami: Besides the weather, I like the fact that it's close to the Caribbean and it's still on the East Coast. It's close enough that I can jump on a plane and be anyplace I'd like to be in just a couple of hours.

Best cheap thrill: Is there one? [laughs] Paninoteca on Lincoln Road [809 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach]. It's a European-style sandwicherie, and they do a really good job at what they do. I love sandwiches, they're kind of like my weakness. They're not that expensive you can get a really good sandwich on the healthy side and be quite happy.

Best not-so-cheap thrill: China Grill [404 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach]. They do a great job, but they're a little bit expensive.

Best barbecue: It doesn't exist. I love barbecue. Last year I went to the annual barbecue festival in Memphis, and I saw how it's really done. It's the Super Bowl of barbecue. There are three days of this event, and 63 categories of barbecue, okay? I will give a prop to a place in Fort Lauderdale, Tom Jenkins Barbecue [1236 S. Federal Highway]. They do a decent job.

Best Caribbean restaurant: Ortanique on the Mile [278 Miracle Mile, Coral Gables]. They just do a really good job. Whenever I walk in the door, I'll get the special or whatever, and I'm never disappointed.

What culinary trends do you predict for the year 2020? I definitely think you're going to see more food inspired and influenced by Africa. That's what I do rigiht now. If you were to call up and ask what kind of food I do, we tell everyone New American. The reason we say that is because it's really easy, and a lot of other chefs are also using that term. What it allows you to do is work under this huge umbrella. But when you say American, what is our country made up of today? There are all kinds of different backgrounds. At my restaurant we have lobster, we have crabcakes, filet mignon, lamb -- all those things you'd get at an upscale gourmet restaurant. But when you see how it's prepared, the flavors are Caribbean and Southern and South American and African. I define all of that as food of the African diaspora. But there's no way I can put that out there right now, because I wouldn't get anyone in the restaurant. But I think as people travel and experience more, it's going to hit. Because you can only do Asian so many ways. Give me a freaking break now.

Clooney was born on May 6, 1961 in Lexington, Kentucky. [13] [14] His mother, Nina Bruce (née Warren), [15] was a beauty queen and city councilwoman. His father, Nick Clooney, is a former anchorman and television host, including five years on the AMC network. [16] Clooney is of Irish, German, and English ancestry. [17] His maternal great-great-great-great-grandmother, Mary Ann Sparrow, was the half-sister of Nancy Lincoln, mother of President Abraham Lincoln. [18] [19] [20] Clooney has an older sister named Adelia (known as Ada). [21] Cabaret singer and actress Rosemary Clooney was an aunt. [13] Through Rosemary, his cousins include actors Miguel Ferrer, Rafael Ferrer, and Gabriel Ferrer, who is married to singer Debby Boone. [22]

Clooney was raised a strict Roman Catholic [23] but said in 1998 that he did not know if he believed "in Heaven, or even God." [24] He has said, "Yes, we were Catholic, big-time, whole family, whole group." [25] He began his education at the Blessed Sacrament School in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky. He attended St. Michael's School in Worthington, Ohio then Western Row Elementary School (a public school) in Mason, Ohio, from 1968 to 1974 and St. Susanna School in Mason, where he served as an altar boy. The Clooneys moved back to Kentucky when George was midway through the seventh grade. [26] In middle school, Clooney developed Bell's palsy, a medical condition that partially paralyzes the face. The malady went away within a year. In an interview with Larry King, he stated that "yes, it goes away. It takes about nine months to go away. It was the first year of high school, which was a bad time for having half your face paralyzed." [25] He also described one positive outcome of the condition: "It's probably a great thing that it happened to me because it forced me to engage in a series of making fun of myself. And I think that's an important part of being famous. The practical jokes have to be aimed at you." [27]

After his parents moved to Augusta, Kentucky, Clooney attended Augusta High School. He has stated that he earned all As and a B in school, [13] and played baseball and basketball. He tried out to play professional baseball with the Cincinnati Reds in 1977, but he did not pass the first round of player cuts and was not offered a contract. [28] He attended Northern Kentucky University from 1979 to 1981, majoring in broadcast journalism, and very briefly attended the University of Cincinnati, but did not graduate from either. [29] He earned money selling women's shoes, insurance door-to-door, stocking shelves, working in construction, and cutting tobacco. [24] [30]

Early work, 1978–1993

Clooney's first role was as an extra in the television mini-series Centennial in 1978, which was based on the novel of the same name by James A. Michener and was partly filmed in Clooney's hometown of Augusta, Kentucky. [31] [32] Clooney's first major role came in 1984 in the short-lived sitcom E/R (not to be confused with ER, the better-known hospital drama, on which Clooney also co-starred a decade later). He played a handyman on the series The Facts of Life and appeared as Bobby Hopkins, a detective, on an episode of The Golden Girls. His first prominent role was a semi-regular supporting role in the sitcom Roseanne, playing Roseanne Barr's supervisor Booker Brooks, followed by the role of a construction worker on Baby Talk, a co-starring role on the CBS drama Bodies of Evidence as Detective Ryan Walker, and then a year-long turn as Det. James Falconer on Sisters. In 1988, Clooney played in the comedy-horror film Return of the Killer Tomatoes. [33] In 1990, he starred in the short-lived ABC police drama Sunset Beat. [34] During this period, Clooney was a student at the Beverly Hills Playhouse acting school for five years. [35]

Breakthrough, 1994–1999

Clooney rose to fame when he played Dr. Doug Ross, alongside Anthony Edwards, Julianna Margulies, and Noah Wyle, on the hit NBC medical drama ER from 1994 to 1999. After leaving the series in 1999, he made a cameo appearance in the 6th season and returned for a guest spot in the show's final season. [36] For his work on the series, Clooney received two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 1995 and 1996. [37] [38] He also earned three Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Actor – Television Series Drama in 1995, 1996, and 1997 (losing to co-star Anthony Edwards). [39] [40]

Clooney began appearing in films while working on ER. His first major Hollywood role was in the horror comedy-crime thriller From Dusk till Dawn, directed by Robert Rodriguez and co-starring Harvey Keitel. He followed its success with the romantic comedy One Fine Day with Michelle Pfeiffer, and the action-thriller The Peacemaker with Nicole Kidman. Clooney was then cast as Batman in Joel Schumacher's Batman & Robin, which was a modest box office performer, but a critical failure (with Clooney himself calling the film "a waste of money"). [41] In 1998, he co-starred in the crime-comedy Out of Sight opposite Jennifer Lopez, marking the first of his many collaborations with director Steven Soderbergh. [42] He also starred in Three Kings during the last weeks of his contract with ER. [43]

After ER, 2000–2010

After leaving ER, Clooney starred in the commercially successful films The Perfect Storm (2000), a disaster drama and O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000), a Coen brothers adventure comedy. In 2001, he teamed up with Soderbergh again for the heist comedy Ocean's Eleven, a remake of the 1960s Rat Pack film of the same name, with Clooney playing Danny Ocean, originally portrayed by Frank Sinatra. It is Clooney's most successful film with him in the lead role, earning $451 million worldwide (he appeared, but did not star, in Gravity, which has a $723 million worldwide box office). [45] [46] Ocean's Eleven inspired two sequels starring Clooney, Ocean's Twelve in 2004 [47] and Ocean's Thirteen in 2007. [48]

In 2001, Clooney and Soderbergh co-founded Section Eight Productions, for which Grant Heslov was president of television. Clooney made his directorial debut in the 2002 film Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, based on the autobiography of TV producer Chuck Barris. Though the film did not do well at the box office, critics stated that Clooney's directing showed promise. [49]

In 2005, Clooney starred in Syriana, which was based loosely on former Central Intelligence Agency agent Robert Baer's memoirs of his service in the Middle East. Clooney suffered an accident on the set of Syriana, which caused a brain injury with complications from a punctured dura. [50] The same year he directed, produced, and starred in Good Night, and Good Luck, a film about 1950s television journalist Edward R. Murrow's famous war of words with Senator Joseph McCarthy. At the 2006 Academy Awards, Clooney was nominated for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Good Night, and Good Luck, as well as Best Supporting Actor for Syriana. He won the Oscar for his role in Syriana. [51]

Clooney next appeared in The Good German (2006), a film noir directed by Soderbergh that is set in post-World War II Germany. In August 2006, Clooney and Heslov started the production company Smokehouse Pictures. In October 2006, Clooney received the American Cinematheque Award, which honors someone in the entertainment industry who has made "a significant contribution to the art of motion pictures". [52] On January 22, 2008, Clooney was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for Michael Clayton (2007) but did not win. Later that year, he directed his third film, Leatherheads, in which he also starred. On April 4, 2008, Variety reported that Clooney had quietly resigned from the Writers Guild of America over a dispute concerning Leatherheads. Clooney, who is the director, producer, and star of the film, claimed that he had contributed in writing "all but two scenes" of it, and requested a writing credit alongside Duncan Brantley and Rick Reilly, who had worked on the screenplay for 17 years. Clooney lost an arbitration vote 2–1, and withdrew from the union over the decision. He became a "financial core status" non-member, meaning he no longer has voting rights, and cannot run for office or attend membership meetings, according to the WGA's constitution. [53]

He next co-starred with Ewan McGregor and Kevin Spacey in the war comedy film The Men Who Stare at Goats, which was directed by Heslov and released in November 2009. Also in November 2009, he voiced the title character in Wes Anderson's animated feature Fantastic Mr. Fox. The same year, Clooney starred in the comedy-drama Up in the Air, which was initially given limited release, and then wide-released on December 25, 2009. For his performance in the film, which was directed by Jason Reitman, he was nominated for a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award, BAFTA, and an Academy Award. [54] 2010 saw the release of The American, based on the novel A Very Private Gentleman by Martin Booth and directed by Anton Corbijn. Clooney played the lead role, and was a producer of the film. [55]

2011–present

As of 2011 [update] , Clooney is represented by Bryan Lourd, co-chairman of Creative Artists Agency (CAA). [56] In 2011 Clooney starred in The Descendants as a husband whose wife has an accident that leaves her in a coma. He earned critical praise for his work, and won the Broadcast Film Critics Association Award for Best Actor and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama. Also, he was nominated for the Screen Actors Guild for Best Actor, the BAFTA Award for Best Actor, and the Academy Award for Best Actor. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for the political drama The Ides of March. In 2013, Clooney won the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Drama, the BAFTA Award for Best Picture and the Academy Award for Best Picture for producing Argo. He is the only person in Academy Award history to be nominated for Oscars in six different categories: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay. Clooney co-starred with Sandra Bullock in Gravity (2013), a space thriller directed by Alfonso Cuarón. [58] He co-wrote, directed and starred in The Monuments Men, an adaption of The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History by Robert M. Edsel. [59] Clooney also produced August: Osage County (2013), an adaptation of the play of the same name. The film stars Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts. [60] His next film was Tomorrowland (2015), a science fiction adventure film in which he played Frank Walker, an inventor. [61] Later in the year, he was featured as himself in the Netflix Christmas musical comedy A Very Murray Christmas, starring Bill Murray. [62]

Hail, Caesar!, a comedy from the Coen brothers set in the Hollywood film industry in the 1950s, premiered in February 2016. Clooney portrayed Baird Whitlock, a Robert Taylor-type film star who is kidnapped during the production of a film. Josh Brolin co-starred as fixer Eddie Mannix. [63] Clooney reunited with Julia Roberts for the Jodie Foster-directed thriller Money Monster (2016), playing the host of a television show that investigates conspiracies on commerce and Wall Street, who is taken hostage by a bankrupt viewer given a bad tip. [64]

In 2013, Clooney co-founded Casamigos Tequila with Rande Gerber and Michael Meldman. [65] It was sold to Diageo for $700 million in June 2017, with an additional $300 million possible depending on the company's performance over the next ten years. [66] According to Forbes annual ranking, he was the world's highest-paid actor for 2017–2018, earning $239 million between June 1, 2017 and June 1, 2018. [67]

In October 2017, his directorial project Suburbicon a 1950s-set crime comedy was released. It stars Matt Damon, Julianne Moore, and Oscar Isaac, from a script written by the Coen brothers in the 1980s, that they had originally intended to direct themselves. [68]

He received the 2018 AFI Life Achievement Award on June 7, 2018. [69]

In 2019, Clooney starred, directed, and produced the Hulu miniseries Catch-22 based upon the novel of the same name by Joseph Heller. [70] Clooney initially was cast in a main role in the series, however, opted to take a smaller supporting role instead. [71] The series premiered on May 31, 2019 to critical acclaim. [72]

Clooney next directed, starred, and produced the science fiction film The Midnight Sky, based upon the Lily Brooks-Dalton debut novel, Good Morning, Midnight, for Netflix. [73] [74]

In February 2021, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Clooney's Smokehouse Pictures would be teaming with Sports Illustrated Studios and 101 Studios to produce a docuseries about the Ohio State University abuse scandal, and that the series would be based on an October 2020 Sports Illustrated article by Jon Wertheim. Political views

Clooney supported both of Barack Obama's 2008 [76] and 2012 presidential campaigns. [77] Clooney endorsed Hillary Clinton for the 2016 presidential election. [78] Clooney endorsed Joe Biden for the 2020 presidential election, [79] and he hosted a virtual fundraiser for Biden together with Obama on July 28, 2020. [80]

Humanitarian work

Clooney is involved with Not On Our Watch Project, an organization that focuses global attention and resources to stop and prevent mass atrocities, along with Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, David Pressman, and Jerry Weintraub. [81] In February 2009, he visited Goz Beida, Chad, with New York Times columnist Nicholas D. Kristof. [82] In January 2010, he organized the telethon Hope for Haiti Now, [83] which collected donations for the 2010 Haiti earthquake victims. [84]

In March 2012, Clooney starred with Martin Sheen and Brad Pitt in a performance of Dustin Lance Black's play '8'—a staged reenactment of the federal trial that overturned California's Prop 8 ban on same-sex marriage—as attorney David Boies. [85] The production was held at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre and broadcast on YouTube to raise money for the American Foundation for Equal Rights. [86] [87] In September 2012, Clooney offered to take an auction winner out to lunch to benefit the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN). GLSEN works to create a safe space in schools for children who are or may be perceived to be gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender. [88]

On August 7, 2020, George and Amal Clooney donated $100,000 to three Lebanese charities after the capital, Beirut, was left devastated by a deadly explosion. They donated money to the Lebanese Red Cross, Impact Lebanon, and Baytna Baytak. The blast claimed the lives of at least 145 people and injured more than 5,000. [89]

Darfur

Clooney has advocated a resolution of the Darfur conflict. [90] He spoke at a 2006 Save Darfur rally in Washington, D.C. In April 2006, he spent ten days in Chad and Sudan with his father to make the TV special "A Journey to Darfur" reflecting the situation of Darfur's refugees, and advocated for action. The documentary was broadcast on American cable TV as well as in the UK and France. In 2008, it was released on DVD with the sale proceeds being donated to the International Rescue Committee. [91] [92] [93] [94] In September of the same year, he spoke to the UN Security Council with Nobel Prize-winner Elie Wiesel to ask the UN to find a solution to the conflict and to help the people of Darfur. [95] In December, he visited China and Egypt with Don Cheadle and two Olympic winners to ask both governments to pressure Sudan's government. [96]

On March 25, 2007, he sent an open letter to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, calling on the European Union to take "decisive action" in the region given the failure of Sudan President Omar al-Bashir to respond to UN resolutions. [97] He narrated and was co-executive producer of the 2007 documentary Sand and Sorrow. [98] Clooney also appeared in the documentary film Darfur Now, a call-to-action film released in November 2007 for people all over the world to help stop the Darfur crisis. [99] In December 2007, Clooney and fellow actor Don Cheadle received the Summit Peace Award from the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates in Rome. In his acceptance speech, Clooney said that "Don and I . stand here before you as failures. The simple truth is that when it comes to the atrocities in Darfur . those people are not better off now than they were years ago." [100] On January 18, 2008, the United Nations announced Clooney's appointment as a UN messenger of peace, effective January 31. [9] [10]

Clooney conceived of and, with John Prendergast – human rights activist, co-founder of the Enough Project, and Strategic Advisor for Not on Our Watch Project – initiated the Satellite Sentinel Project (SSP), after an October 2010 trip to South Sudan. SSP aims to monitor armed activity for signs of renewed civil war between Sudan and South Sudan, and to detect and deter mass atrocities along the border regions there. [101]

Clooney and John Prendergast co-wrote a Washington Post op-ed piece in May 2011, titled "Dancing with a dictator in Sudan", arguing that:

President Omar al-Bashir has been indicted by the International Criminal Court for genocide, is escalating bombing and food aid obstruction in Darfur, and he now threatens the entire north-south peace process . the evidence shows that incentives alone are insufficient to change Khartoum's calculations. International support should be sought immediately for denying debt relief, expanding the ICC indictments, diplomatically isolating the regime, suspending all non-humanitarian aid, obstructing state-controlled bank transactions and freezing accounts holding oil wealth diverted by senior regime officials. [102]

On March 16, 2012, Clooney was arrested outside the Sudanese Embassy for civil disobedience. [103] [104] He intended to be arrested when he planned the protest. [104] Several other prominent participants were also arrested, including Martin Luther King III. [104] Clooney has been described as one of the most strident critics of Omar al-Bashir. [105]

Armenian Genocide

Clooney supports the recognition of the Armenian Genocide. He is one of the chief associates of the 100 Lives Initiative, a project which aims to remember the lives lost during the event. [106] As part of the initiative, Clooney launched the Aurora Prize, which awards to those who risk their lives to prevent genocides and atrocities. [106] [107] Clooney had also urged various American government officials to support the United States' recognition of the Armenian Genocide. [107] Clooney visited Armenia to commemorate the 101st anniversary of the event in April 2016. [108]

Syria

In May 2015, Clooney told the BBC that the Syrian conflict was too complicated politically to get involved in and he wanted to focus on helping the refugees. [109] In March 2016, he and his wife, Amal Clooney, met with Syrian refugees living in Berlin to mark the fifth anniversary of the conflict, before meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel to thank her for Germany's open-door policy. [110]

Gun control

In 2018, following the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, the Clooneys pledged $500,000 to the March for Our Lives and said they would be in attendance. [111]

LGBT rights

Clooney is a supporter of gay rights. [112] On March 28, 2019, Clooney wrote an open letter calling for the boycott of the Sultan of Brunei's hotels over a new law that came into force on April 3, 2019 that punishes homosexual sex and adultery with death by stoning. Clooney lists 9 hotels including The Dorchester, 45 Park Lane, Coworth Park, The Beverly Hills Hotel, Hotel Bel-Air, Le Meurice, Hotel Plaza Athenee, Hotel Eden and Hotel Principe di Savoia and asks readers to consider how "we are putting money directly into the pockets of men who choose to stone and whip to death their own citizens for being gay or accused of adultery." [113] [114]

Relationships

Clooney dated actress Kelly Preston (1987–1989). During this relationship, he purchased a Vietnamese Pot-bellied pig named Max as a gift for Preston, but when their relationship ended, Clooney kept the pig for an additional 18 years until Max died in 2006. He has jokingly referred to Max as the longest relationship he had ever had. [115]

Clooney was married to actress Talia Balsam from 1989 to 1993. [116] He also had a relationship with actress Ginger Lynn Allen. [ citation needed ] In 1995, Clooney dated Cameron Diaz and Frances Fisher. [117] Clooney dated French reality TV personality Céline Balitran (1996–1999). [118] In 2000 he was linked to Charlize Theron and Lucy Liu. [119] After meeting British model Lisa Snowdon in 2000, he had a five-year on-again, off-again relationship with her. [120] Clooney dated Renée Zellweger (2001), Jennifer Siebel Newsom (2002), [121] Krista Allen (2002–2008), [122] and Linda Thompson (2006). [123] In June 2007, he started dating reality personality Sarah Larson, but the couple broke up in May 2008. [124] In July 2009, Clooney was in a relationship with Italian actress Elisabetta Canalis until they split in June 2011. [125] [126] In July 2011, Clooney started dating former WWE personnel Stacy Keibler, [127] and they ended their relationship in July 2013. [128]

Clooney became engaged to British-Lebanese human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin on April 28, 2014. [129] [130] He subsequently said they forged a strong bond because of their interest in campaigning work, and particularly over the issue of the Elgin Marbles, when she was acting for the government of Greece in support of their return from the British Museum and he, while promoting his film The Monuments Men, had argued for this and been criticised by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson. [131]

In July 2014, Clooney publicly mocked the British tabloid newspaper the Daily Mail after it claimed his fiancée's mother opposes their marriage on religious grounds. [132] When the tabloid apologized for its false story, Clooney refused to accept the apology. He called the paper "the worst kind of tabloid. One that makes up its facts to the detriment of its readers." [133] On August 7, 2014, Clooney and Alamuddin obtained marriage licenses at the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea of the United Kingdom. [134] Alamuddin and Clooney were officially married on September 27, 2014, at Ca' Farsetti. [135] They were married by Clooney's friend Walter Veltroni, the former mayor of Rome. [136]

In 2015, Clooney and Alamuddin adopted a rescue dog, a Bassett Hound named Millie, from the San Gabriel Valley Humane Society. [137] On February 9, 2017, it was reported by the CBS talk show, The Talk, that Amal was pregnant, and that they were expecting twins. [138] On June 6, 2017, Amal gave birth to a daughter, Ella, and a son, Alexander. [139] In 2020, Clooney revealed to Jimmy Kimmel and Graham Norton in their respective talk shows that the twins can speak Italian fluently, despite both Clooney and Alamuddin not speaking the language.

Real estate

Clooney has property in Los Angeles. He purchased the 7,354-square-foot (683.2 m 2 ) house in 1995 through his George Guilfoyle Trust. His home in Italy is in the village of Laglio, on Lake Como, [140] near the former residence of Italian author Ada Negri. [141] Clooney also owns a home in Los Cabos, Mexico, that is next door to the home of Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber. [142] In 2014, Clooney and his new British wife Amal Alamuddin bought the Grade II listed [143] Mill House on an island in the River Thames at Sonning Eye in Oxfordshire, England [144] at a cost of around £10 million. [145] In May 2021, The Economic Times reported Clooney plans to buy a vineyard near the village of Brignoles, in France, which includes an 18th-century manor with its own swimming pool and a tennis court. [146]

Motorcycle accidents

On September 21, 2007, Clooney and then-girlfriend Sarah Larson were injured in a motorcycle accident in Weehawken, New Jersey when his motorcycle was hit by a car. The driver of the car reported that Clooney attempted to pass him on the right, [147] while Clooney said that the driver signaled left and then decided to make an abrupt right turn and clipped his motorcycle. On October 9, 2007, more than two dozen staff at Palisades Medical Center were suspended without pay for looking at Clooney's medical records in violation of federal law. [148]

On July 10, 2018, Clooney was hit by a car while riding a motorcycle to a film set in Sardinia. He was hospitalized with minor injuries. [149] [150]

Sports

Growing up around Cincinnati, Clooney is a fan of the Cincinnati Bengals and Cincinnati Reds. [151] He tried out to be a Red in 1977. [152]

Clooney has appeared in commercials outside the U.S. for Fiat, Nespresso, Martini vermouth, and Omega. [153] [154] [155] [156] Clooney was named one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2007, 2008, and 2009. [157] [158] [159] He is sometimes described as one of the most handsome men in the world. [160] [161] In 2005, TV Guide ranked Clooney No. 1 on its "50 Sexiest Stars of All Time" list. [162] The cover story in a February 2008 issue of Time magazine was headlined with: "George Clooney: The last movie star". [163]

He was parodied in the South Park episode "Smug Alert!", which criticizes his acceptance speech at the 78th Academy Awards. [ citation needed ] Clooney has also lent his voice to South Park as Sparky the Dog in "Big Gay Al's Big Gay Boat Ride" and as the emergency room doctor in South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut. Clooney was caricatured in the American Dad! episode "Tears of a Clooney", in which Francine Smith plans to destroy him. [164]

Director Alexander Cartio made his debut feature film, Convincing Clooney, about a Los Angeles artist who, faced with rejection as an actor and screenwriter, concocts a master plan to get Clooney to star in his first-ever low-budget short film. The movie was released on DVD in November 2011. [165]

Throughout his career, Clooney has won two Academy Awards, one for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Syriana [166] and one for Best Picture as one of the producers for Argo, as well as a BAFTA and a Golden Globe. For his role in The Descendants, he won a Golden Globe Award [167] and was nominated for an Academy Award, BAFTA Award, Satellite Award, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards: Best Lead Actor and Best Cast. [168] On January 11, 2015, Clooney was awarded the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award.

In-Person Events

Artist Ben Sakoguchi’s new show “Chinatown” at the Bel Ami gallery in Chinatown focuses on the violence and discrimination against Asian Americans for centuries in the U.S. Sakoguchi spent a few years as a child in a Japanese internment camp in Arizona during World War II. The works in his exhibit remind viewers that xenophobia isn’t something new and predates the recent shootings in Atlanta and the on-going attacks on Asian Americans during the pandemic.

LUMINEX: Dialogues of Light is a free outdoor digital art event happening for just one night, April 10, from 7:30-11:30 p.m. in downtown L.A. Curated by the NOW Art Foundation, the show includes work from seven L.A. artists, including Refik Anadol, Nancy Baker Cahill, Sarah Rara, The Art Department, Carole Kim, Luciana Abait, and Akiko Yamashita. The art is projected on L.A. buildings, and guests can engage with it by walking within a five-block radius. No tickets are required, but there is a QR code you can download to access a map and audio messages from the artists, so bring your headphones!

Jeffrey Deitch gallery in Hollywood is open for in-person viewing with advance reservations. Its exhibit “Shattered Glass” is a group exhibition of 40 artists of color who explore questions of power, surveillance, and justice. On view till May 22.

Galerie XII Los Angeles in Santa Monica presents the solo exhibit Mona Kuhn: Works April 10 through May 29. The show features a retrospective of the art photographer’s career. There will be a book signing on April 10 from 2-4 p.m.

The Corey Helford Gallery presents its 15-Year Anniversary Group Exhibition on April 10, featuring work from over 100 artists. The show remains on view through May 15. Shawn Huckins: The Birds Will Sing takes its name from a Cajun murder ballad, while the paintings similarly depict “what appears at first glance to be simply breathtaking landscapes but which are overlaid with wistfully dark statements about contemporary love.” Sarah Williams: Southeast of Home features nightscapes that are “simultaneously inviting and eerily mysterious.”

Rele Gallery, Los Angeles presents Life After Life, a debut solo exhibition from contemporary Nigerian artist Ameh Egwuh. Per a release: “Drawing its title from psychiatrist Raymond Moody’s 1975 book Life After Life, the exhibition explores the idea of human mortality and the afterlife, presenting death as a liminal and transmutative process of movement between worlds, a performative threshold between disparate but closely connected ways of being.” On view through May 8.

Through April, Alo Yoga will host outdoor yoga sessions at The Grove every Wednesday at 9 a.m. Open to all experience levels. $10, bring your own mat.

The LA Choral Lab presents SOUNDWALK in Griffith Park. Guests wear headphones as they explore the park, and the choral music they hear will change based on their location. The SOUNDWALK’s grand opening event is on April 11, but the piece will remain available for the next few weeks. Tickets are -$25.

Market Tavern, located at the Original Farmers Market, is now offering a weekend brunch menu from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday. The new globally-inspired menu includes dishes like Spicy Fried Chicken and Waffles, Japanese Souffle Pancakes, Full English Breakfast, MT Loco Moco, and more. The Billboard Creative’s L.A. Billboard Project returns with 30 billboards transformed into large-format art by emerging and established artists, including Ramiro Gomez, Phung Huynh, Narsiso Martinez, and Calida Rawles. The Aquarium of the Pacific’s exhibits and galleries have reopened, including the Sea Otter Habitat, Shark Lagoon, and Pacific Visions. Advance reservations are required.

Kohn Gallery presents a solo exhibition by New Haven-based artist Chiffon Thomas. Titled Antithesis, Thomas’s exhibition of figurative assemblages examine the hardships faced by defining one’s identity in modern society. Opening hours this weekend will be extended, Friday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The award-winning Baldwin Hills restaurant Post & Beam has reopened for dine-in service with new Chef de Cuisine Martin Draluck, formerly of Hatchet Hall. Diners will see the return of favorite dishes such as vegan crab cakes, shrimp grits, jerk catfish, and beef short ribs, alongside new additions including an oyster menu.

South Coast Botanic Garden’s butterfly experience SOAR is now open to the public featuring a new pavilion with live tropical butterflies. Advance reservations are required and can be made online now.

Bill Esparza’s taco festival Taqueando pivoted last year to a multi-week pop-up in DTLA featuring rotating guest chefs and their most popular tacos. For 2021, Taqueando continues with a four-week pop-up (March 10 – April 25) by Chef Priscilla Curiel of San Diego’s famed Tuétano Taquería, Ricky Piña of Ricky’s Fish Tacos, and tamales (to-go) from Tamales Elena y Antojitos. Wine, beer, and cocktails will also be on the menu. The Taqueando pop-up is open Wednesday through Sunday from 5-10 p.m. for takeout, delivery, and outdoor dining on the restaurant’s patio (first-come, first-served basis). Note that Ricky’s Fish Tacos will only be serving Thursday through Saturday.

On April 1, LACMA reopened its indoor galleries, including six brand new exhibits, for public viewing in accordance with Public Health guidelines. For now, there will be no in-person screenings or events, but the LACMA Store and the LACMA Café airstream will be open. Ray’s & Stark Bar and Coffee + Milk will also reopened on April 7. ROW DTLA is giving back to frontline workers with a “Buy A Meal, Give A Meal” campaign from March 20-April 16. For every meal purchased on-site at one of ROW DTLA’s culinary concepts, one meal will be donated to essential workers at Keck Hospital of USC. Participating restaurants include Hayato, Rappahannock Oyster Bar, Go Get ‘Em Tiger, Pikunico and Café Dulce with meals donated from a different restaurant each week.

The Petersen Automotive Museum is now to the public featuring three new exhibits including Supercars: A Century of Spectacle and Speed. The Andaz West Hollywood’s Late Night Drive-In series takes place on the third level of the hotel’s parking garage. On April 10, they’ll screen Cinema Paradiso.

HBO Max is hosting Genera+ion Un-Fashion Showcase, a pop-up installation with FIDM and costume designer Shirley Kurata to celebrate the first season of Genera+ion, a new dramedy series “following a diverse group of high school students whose exploration of modern sexuality (devices and all) tests deeply entrenched beliefs about life, love and the nature of family in their conservative community.” The event takes place April 2-21 at The LAB in Orange County and features “custom-made fashion looks inspired by each of the central characters on the show, created by up-and-coming student and alumni designers.”

The 36th annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival runs March 31 through April 10 this year, offering both free beachfront drive-in screenings and online screenings. Desert X’s biannual public art show continues through May 16. Artists have been commissioned to use the desert landscape as their canvas with breathtaking results. You’ll find the works spread throughout the Coachella Valley in various outdoor locations. On April 9, Desert X will unveil a new work by New York-based artist Christopher Myers titled The Art of Taming Horses.

Knott’s Taste of Boysenberry Festival features over 80 boysenberry-inspired savory and sweet bites and themed beverages. The festival takes place at the theme park on select dates through May 2. Tickets are $45.

At-Home & Online Events

To bring greater awareness around Child Abuse Prevention Month, join Eat. Drink. Give. With Wolfgang Puck, a virtual interactive dinner party hosted by Iron Chef judge Billy Harris with meal kits prepared by Puck. The online charity event takes place on Saturday, April 17, but we’re telling you this week because tickets are on sale until April 8. It’s $50 to attend the party without food and drinks. To add the meal kit—which includes a four-course dinner for two, cocktails, and bottle of wine—it’s $500. All proceeds from this event will go directly towards Children’s Bureau’s prevention and treatment programs for at-risk children and their parents. Children’s Bureau hopes to raise funds to assist 300 families in need for an entire year.

USC Comedy Festival goes virtual this year (April 9-11) with free streamings of panels and Q& A’s featuring Bill Hader, Aidy Bryant, Patton Oswalt, and show creators and producers from What We Do In Shadows, Shrill, M.O.D.O.K, and more.

Artist Patrisse Cullors performed F*ck White Supremacy, Let’s Get Free to a live audience at Frieze Los Angeles back in February 2020. On April 11 from noon to 6 p.m., Cullors will once again perform this work to a virtual audience hosted by The Hammer Museum. This event includes DJ sets by collectives Everyday People in New York City and Cumbiatón in Los Angeles, and a conversation between Cullors and Hammer Museum associate curator Erin Christovale. Take a virtual tour of everything Friends with On Location Tours. Host Roseanne Almanzar leads a 40-minute tour of 18 locations from the series. Linked Dance Theatre has partnered with the Alzheimer’s Charity, Hilarity for Charity founded in 2012 by Seth Rogen and Lauren Miller Rogen, on She Sends Herself / Elle S’Envoie. It’s an interactive virtual experience that uses multiples teams of performers across two continents to tell the story of Elle, a woman who is struggling with memory loss and how it affects her family. View-only tickets are $30, while interactive tickets, which include a box of curated materials to enhance the experience, are $200. Proceeds benefit Hilarity for Charity.

Pepperdine Theatre presents a virtual performance of Shakespeare’s As You Like It April 9-11. Tickets are free, but must be reserved here.

The Culinary Historians of Southern California present The Strangest Cooking methods in the World with historian-author Richard Foss on April 10 at 10:30 a.m. The virtual lecture will explore how people cooked when a fire or oven wasn’t available. Methods include volcanoes, auto engines, weapons, and more. Reserve a free ticket here.

On April 11 at 4 p.m., join the Art Deco Society for Art Deco Entertainment Venues of the Post-Prohibition Years: A Postcard Pictorial. The Japan Foundation presents the online exhibit 11 Stories on Distanced Relationships: Contemporary Art from Japan through May 5. It features 11 new works from Japanese artists on the theme “translating distance.”

Delejos is an immersive theater experience conducted over Zoom from writer/actor/comedian Julia Piñero. When her partner, Jose Zambrano, died unexpectedly in 2019, Piñero turned to Zambrano’s unfinished virtual reality game about long-distance love, Delejos. Though Delajos was originally about Zambrano’s forced immigration from Venezuela, it took on a new meaning for Piñero after his death. This two-hour performance is “a true story that weaves together standup comedy, live music, and a virtual reality experience.” Tickets are currently available through May 1. They’re free, but you’ll need to reserve them here.

Underneath the Freeways of Los Angeles is a virtual interactive murder-mystery experience by Matthew Paul Olmos and directed by Michael Alvarez. The show is set in 1960s L.A., where two bodies have been discovered in Hollenbeck Park in East L.A. The audience must ask the right questions to find the guilty party. Show dates are April 2-28. Tickets are $15-25 here.

Nikuman-ya, located at the Tokyo Central & Main Food Court in Gardena, is where you can get handmade dim sum and steamed buns. Recently, they’ve added a Boager to the menu. It’s a massive double cheeseburger sandwiched between white fluffy bao buns. Available for takeout. Delivery can be requested through Grubhub, Postmates, and Doordash.

King’s Hawaiian and Wexler’s Deli have partnered on the “Aloha Reuben,” a hearty sandwich with corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, Russian dressing, and pineapple on King’s Hawaiian Sliced Bread. It’s a perfect combination of sweet and savory, available now through April 30 at both Wexler’s locations or through Goldbelly.

Umami Burger is teaming up with twin sister DJ duo NERVO for a limited-time-only burger to celebrate their new single “Pickle,” featuring Paris Hilton and Tinie Tempah. The NERVO Pickle Burger features the new Umami burger patty, provolone cheese, fried pickles, and jalapeño pickle ranch on a brioche bun. The burger comes in a branded box with a QR code to stream the video for NERVO’s “Pickle.” Available through May 9 at all Umami Burger locations and delivery platforms Postmates, UberEats, and Doordash, and GrubHub.

Food Scene In Nashville

Yes, it’s the birthplace of Nashville hot chicken. Yes, it’s easy to find biscuits and barbecue by the bucket-full. And yes, there’s more country music than you can shake a stick at. But with roots set in decades of Southern cooking meshed with the influence of immigrants from the far reaches of the globe, Nashville is quickly building its restaurant repertoire with a variety of noteworthy spots, far from basic.

Nashville’s dining scene is exploding thanks to a combination of chef-driven restaurants and classic dining spots offering up a huge variety of delicious dishes.

1. Cafe Roze
This all day cafe was my saving grace when we first moved from NYC to Nashville. Opened by Julia Jaksic (formerly of Jack’s Wife Freda) upon her own move away from the city, it’s the meeting ground for every morning coffee run, business lunch and late night fries and wine with my girlfriends. The space and vibe reminded me so much of the New York spots I loved. Situated on a corner spot in East Nashville, it’s filled with natural light and the food is always on point. Favorites include the avocado hummus, green goddess salad and the dinner bowl. Oh, don’t forget a side of fries, always. If you go for brunch, go early!

2. Marche
It’s a Nashville staple. Owner, Margot McCormack was one of the first spots to brave the east side over a decade ago to open Marche’s sister restaurant, Margot. This European style bistro serves fresh and seasonal options and always has a stack of pastries and goodies. We’ve been locals here, but usually stick to visiting during the weekday, since it’s insanely popular with the weekend crowds… and for good reason!

3. Folk
If you’ve ever visited us in Nashville, we’ve likely taken you here for dinner! This menu is fresh, interesting and bold. Fan favorites are the fresh bread and butter and pizzas. While the ingredients change, they’re always beyond amazing. I love to cozy up in on of the booths, grab a glass of wine and enjoy their meals. Their cocktails are insanely delicious as well!

4. Superica
It’s hard to execute Tex-Mex outside of Texas… I know this because I’m married to a man from Texas who has high standards for this cuisine! But this Atlanta based restaurant far exceeded my expectations. First, their tortillas were incredible and it’s the best queso I’ve had outside of Texas itself. It’s located in the Gulch neighborhood, which can get a bit touristy, but it’s located a block off of the main strip. It has a little Austin vibe, but fits in perfectly here in Nashville. I’m also a sucker for branding and theirs was done so well!

5. Babo
We have a lot of Atlanta based restaurants and chefs merging over into Nashville and I’m so delighted their brining their work to our city! Babo is a new favorite of ours that just recently opened and offers traditional Korean dishes like bibimbap, bulgogi and kimchi friend rice in a laidback setting. Also, they have an amazing happy hour and are open late (until 1am!)… which, if you know me, are the two timeframes you’ll see me at a restaurant!


I am a food blog

Mike and I went on a little road trip this summer and while seeing the National Parks was inspiring and all, the real reason we hit the road was: green chile cheeseburgers. Have you heard of them?! Maybe not because they’re a New Mexico thing, through and through. Think: regular cheeseburgers but with smoky, slightly spicy, roasted green chile on top. Green chile is the ultimate burger topping that you never knew you were missing out on.

They’re a Southwest invention and in New Mexico, they’re a source of state pride. Green chile cheeseburgers are practically a state symbol and now, when I see the New Mexico flag, a red sun symbol in a field of yellow, I imagine the yellow as cheese and picture the red sun as a green chile. I’m officially obsessed.

Green chile cheeseburgers are such a big deal that the New Mexico tourism board created a green chile cheeseburger trail. That’s right, you can road trip up and down the state and eat your fill of green chile cheeseburgers. Mike was the one who came up with the idea of traveling the green chile cheeseburger trail and I have to admit, at first, I was like, okay but not especially enthused. Mike has been talking about green chile cheeseburgers for years now but they never really hooked me. Until this trip, that is.

Now, we’ve eaten 15 plus GCCs (what I’m calling green chile cheeseburgers from now on) and we can’t stop, won’t stop. Actually, we have stopped to eat chile rellenos, carne adobada, breakfast burritos, and sopapillas, but my heart keeps returning to GCCs.

In the world of GCCs, it seems like there are two camps: the green chili cheeseburger with veggies or without veggies. Generally they also do veggies on the side, so you can add them or not, but the main difference I feel is a smothered style, a la an enchilada or burrito and a regular cheeseburger style. Really though, Mike and I agree, the smothered style GCC isn’t really a GCC at all. After all, of you can’t pick it up with your hands, is it really a cheeseburger?

Now that we’ve eaten our way through New Mexico, I think we can both definitively say that we’re somewhat versed in what makes a great GCC. We rated all the burgers we ate on a five point scale: green chile, patty, cheese, bun, and vegetables. And because I will forever love food graphs and things a little bit nerdy, Mike and I came up with these spider charts of the results. Read on to find out which green chile cheeseburger reigns supreme. And let us know if we missed anything essential – we’re definitely heading back to NM, I’m so addicted to green chile, it’s not even funny.

Side note: green chile cheeseburgers are not the prettiest burgers on the block. To be honest, we had trouble photographing them, that’s why we don’t have clear photos of each burger >__<

The Burger Stand at Taos Ale House
This was the first GCC we tried and it did not disappoint. The fire roasted green chile was spicy and good (although I thought there wasn’t enough of it), the patty was a proper medium rare with a good crust and the cheese was a melty pepper jack cheese. I didn’t care too much for the bun but Mike thought it was one of the best buns we had: a buttered toasted brioche. The veggies were also really fresh – a thick slice of white onion, a juicy generous tomato and spicy arugula. All in all a very good burger.

Orlando’s New Mexican Cafe, Taos
This was recommended to us by a local and true to what he said, there was a line out the door even when we arrived right when they opened at 5pm. It’s a classic New Mexican place and while there was a standard green chile cheeseburger on the menu, I went with the Sloppy Bro: an open faced burger with red and green chile. It’s not really fair to compare this to the other green chile cheeseburgers we had on the trail but it was really good! There was an excellent patty to cheese to chili ratio. The patty cooked a juicy medium rare and the chile was plentiful. The cheese was a regular shredded Mexican mix and there were no vegetables and the bun was obviously soggy, but the chile and cheese and burger patty were excellent.

El Parasol, Española
This was by far one of the best green chile cheeseburgers on the trail. The original location is a tiny little takeaway shack in Española, but they’ve expanded to multiple locations, including Los Alamos and Santa Fe. The burgers come wrapped in foil and white wax paper held together with a wooden toothpick. Unwrapping the burger is a little bit like unwrapping a delicious present.

Their hand formed patties are big and juicy, cooked smash and scrape style and the green chile was verdant and piquant – sometimes I felt the like green chile in other burgers weren’t spicy enough, but the green chile in El Parasol’s burger was just right. The bun was buttered and crispy and the American cheese was just the right amount of melty. The vegetables were nothing to write home about, but all together this was a burger that made you want to eat more than one. We actually did eat more than one, basically stopping at every El Parasol in the State. They’re good at all the locations guys.

And bonus: their crispy chicken and guacamole tacos are AMAZING, don’t skip out on them if you go.

Atrisco Cafe & Bar, Santa Fe
This was a big burger cooked medium rare, with a little bit of browning, but not super charred. The green chile was good but somehow got muddled in the burger. On it’s own the green chile was amazing but maybe the ratio of bun to vegetables masked it. The bun was a standard toasted and buttered sesame seed guy and the vegetables were pretty standard too with red onions instead of the white we’d been seeing a lot of. The cheese was a melty cheddar which I think works on some burgers, but kind of got slightly congealed here. All in all a solid GCC but not one of our favorites. That being said, I’d eat this in a heartbeat if it was right here in front of me right now.

The Pantry, Santa Fe
The Panty is a beloved Santa Fe classic with a retro neon sign and a cute diner counter serving up New Mexican comfort food. We went with the Pantry Burger, smothered in chile, cheese, and grilled onions served open face. In retrospect we probably should have gone the make your own burger route and added green chile on top, but hindsight is always 20/20. We got this guy Christmas style (red and green chile) and it was absolutely smothered in chile. The chile was amazing but the burger itself was just standard and the bun was nothing to write home about. The curly fries were awesome though. But, El Parasol is across the street, so…

Rustic on the Green, Albuquerque
There’s a cute little container park type thing in Albuquerque that has a bunch of restaurants, stores, and places to get drinks called Green Jeans. We grabbed a burger at Rustic on the Green, the brick and mortar shop of a very popular ABQ food truck, Rustic 505. Rustic makes a beloved city favorite and this was one of Mike’s favorite GCCs. The veggies were super fresh and crisp and there was plenty of green chile which added a nice layer of heat. The bun was not my favorite and I felt like there was a touch too much mustard but the patty was cooked well and the cheese was nice and melty.

Blake’s Lotaburger, Multiple Locations
Blake’s has been around since the 50s and is beloved in New Mexico, kind of like their version of In-N-Out. Mike and I both were excited to try Blake’s and it didn’t disappoint. We got a double and it was just loaded with certified green and red fire roasted hatch chiles that actually had a bit of spice. The patties were thin and charred, the cheese was American and melty and the whole thing tasted like what you would think a really well thought out delicious GCC would taste like. The inside was pure 50s all red chairs and white formica tabletops and it was nostalgic and retro and cute. Lotaburger was one of our only repeats, possibly because they’re readily available all across the state.

Duran’s, Albuquerque
Duran’s is an old fashioned drug store with a cute little New Mexican restaurant in the back. They’re known for their adobada and not their green chile cheeseburgers, but we soldiered on – we were on a GCC crawl after all. The good thing about Duran’s: unbelievably fluffy and flaky house made tortillas. The not so good thing about Duran’s: the green chile cheeseburger. It wasn’t anything special – the bun was kind of stale and the patty was slightly over cooked. There was a moderate amount of green and red chile but other than that, it should have been skipped. But, the tortillas were totally to die for, so go and get the adobada plate and extra tortillas, you won’t regret it.

Garcia’s Cafe, Albuquerque
If it seems like there are a bunch of Albuquerque staples for New Mexican food, it’s because there are – all with good reason. Garcia’s – it was featured on Breaking Bad once – is one of the places most mentioned with people are looking for classic, good, New Mexican food. Mike got a combination plate but I got a GCC of course. The bun was nicely buttered and toasty, the patty was extra charred which highlighted the smokiness of the chile, which was plentiful. The cheese could have been a bit more melted but it was a solid burger.

MÁS Tapas y Vino, Albuquerque
There’s a green chile cheeseburger smackdown in Santa Fe every year and last year, the Greene Chile Honey Bun from MÁS won. The bun was a house made milk bun and there was a thick slab of honey bacon on top too. The green chile was smoky and on the spicy side. This one one of the rare burgers that didn’t have any vegetables. The patty was thick and super flavorful with a lot of char, but despite asking us how we wanted it cooked (medium-rare, always), it came out on the well done side and was kind of a bit dry, to be honest. The cheese, which was a local cheddar, wasn’t quite as melty as I would have liked.

La Plazuela at La Fonda, Santa Fe
This was another really well regarded New Mexican restaurant. The green chile was good, but kind of on the skimpy side. The patty was excellent though, thick, juicy and a nice rosy medium rare capped off with a melty cheese. Nothing makes me sadder than a cheeseburger with unmelted cheese and so this one definitely passed the test.

Frontier, Albuquerque
Frontier is an all day line up and order at the counter diner that spans a whole city block. It’s right next UNM and there are a ton of students, families, and tourists that head there to eat at all times of the day. Even if the lines are long, they move quickly there’s a board that flashes with your order number when your food is ready. The burger was standard college fair, that is, cheap and somewhat tasty, but when there are so many other excellent GCCs in town, not something that I’d recommend. The only redeeming quality was the amount of green (and red) chile.

The Owl Bar and Cafe
The Owl is a listing on the official New Mexico Tourism board approved Green Chile Cheeseburger Trail, but to be honest, we weren’t planning on eating there. Our intention was to hit up the Buckhorn, a super well known GCC. The Buckhorn was closed (it’s supposed to reopen with new owners) so we headed right across the street to The Owl. It’s a super old bar that’s been slinging burgers since the 50s. We got a double meat double chili as a consolation burger for The Buckhorn being closed but we were so blown away that we ordered a second burger after demolishing the first. The patties were thin in the classic smash and scrape style, the bun was toasty, the veggies fresh, the American cheese melty, and the chile was just the right amount of smoke and spice.

Rocking BZ Burgers, Alamogordo
We stopped in White Sands National Park for a night of camping but before we set up our tent, we headed to Alamogordo for a GCC at Rocking BZ Burgers, winner of the Green Chile Cheeseburger Champion at the New ME. We tried the winning burger, “The Champ,” which is a half pound patty, grilled onions, American cheese, green chile, lettuce and tomato. The patty was cooked to a juicy medium rare, the chile was plentiful, and the white American cheese was beautifully melted.

The Burger Nook, Las Cruces
The Burger Nook was another entry on the official GGC highway so of course we had to stop in. It was empty when we got there but it filled up quickly with locals having not one, but two burgers each. They have two sizes, so if you’re feeling particularly hungry, the large will more than satisfy. This was one of the last GCCs that we had and already, Mike and I were waxing nostalgic about how the green chile and cheese went so perfectly with the smash and scrape patty. The bun left something to be desired, but really, it’s all about the chile.

Whew, that was A LOT of green chile cheeseburgers. And the thing is, we definitely missed some that we wanted to eat too. Do you guys have a favorite green chile cheeseburger? Have you every had one? Also, can you answer the eternal question: green chile on top of the cheese or under the cheese?

It looks like you guys hit some great places! I’ll have to check out El Parasol–I’ve never stopped there before, which seems like a very dumb mistake.
The Bobcat Bite in Santa Fe (RIP) made one of the very best green chile cheeseburgers, and its recipes are now made and served at a restaurant called Santa Fe Bite, in Albuquerque. I’ve not been to this particular location, but I’ve heard good things about it. Holy Cow in Albuquerque has a very good green chile cheeseburger, too. Next time at the Frontier, I recommend the Western-style hash browns (hash browns topped with green chile and melted cheese).
