Tangy, garlicky, and addictive, ranch dressing is the ultimate pizza-enhancer, but it's not always the healthiest. Our tasty, Greek yogurt-based riff is a smarter way to jazz up your pie from crust to toppings.

Ranch dressing is a hotly-debated ingredient amongst pizza aficionados. Devotees dunk their crusts in the zippy dressing without avail, while traditionalists often want nothing to do with it. No matter the opinion, one fact stands strong: America is a country of ranch lovers, so we might as well embrace it. According to 2016 data from the U.S. Census and Simmons National Consumer Survey, ranch is the most consumed salad dressing in the country (by a landslide!).

While ranch dressing typically entails a crisp, green salad, it’s common to see it blanketed over burgers and tacos or spooned into a bowl as a dip for veggies, chicken wings, and of course—pizza. From delivery shops to higher-end restaurants, pizza makers all over the country are getting in on the ranch revelry. Bruno, an innovative pizzeria in New York City, serves up a pepperoni pie drizzled with housemade ranch dressing, garlic confit, and fresh dill. Papa John’s Pizza, first known for their garlic butter sauce, offers ranch dressing as an add-on dipping sauce.

Eating healthy should still be delicious.

So, which side of the debate do we take? Frankly, we don’t mind a drizzle of ranch over our pie—and if dunking your crusts in the dressing tastes delicious, then by all means enjoy it. However, traditional ranch dressing packs a load of calories, fat, and sodium, so slathering it all over your slice is not the healthiest choice. Furthermore, bottled ranch dressing often contains preservatives and additives such as Monosodium Glutamate (MSG). Ranch dressing only needs a few key ingredients—mayonnaise, buttermilk, garlic, and herbs—so why not make it from-scratch? Below, we've developed a simple and tasty recipe that packs flavor and a punch of protein by swapping mayo for Greek yogurt.

Once you make our dressing, pour it into a squeeze bottle for easy drizzling over your slice. When choosing the actual pizza, saltier toppings such as pepperoni, ham, buffalo chicken, or bacon and raw greens such as arugula or chopped romaine will stand up best to ranch's creamy consistency and tangy flavor. Here’s a few of our top pizza picks:

If your sole intention is dipping your pizza crust in ranch dressing, then start with one of our delicious homemade pizza dough recipes and dunk away!

Easy Homemade Ranch Dressing is the ultimate ranch dip and dressing recipe made with mayonnaise, sour cream, chives, dill weed, and other pantry seasonings.

Score big with tasty Party Appetizers like Buffalo Wings and Crispy Chicken Fingers by pairing them with homemade dipping sauces. The ultimate game day dunking experience!

HOMEMADE RANCH DRESSING

Whether it’s pizza in ranch, fries with ranch, or veggies with ranch, this creamy, tangy dressing is the dip that everyone loves! Making Homemade Ranch Dressing is super simple and you don’t need any extra fancy ingredients for a quick batch in minutes. The longer you let it sit, the more ranch flavor your dressing will have, but it’s also delicious as soon as it’s made.

You don’t have to just serve this Homemade Ranch Dressing as a dip, you can use it for salads or sandwich spreads too. This mayonnaise and sour cream homemade ranch recipe is thicker than a bottled ranch salad dressing, but you can add a splash of milk or buttermilk until it’s the desired consistency for drizzling. The base ingredients give you a perfectly balanced ranch flavor, but feel free to adjust to how zesty or mild you like your dressing.

This made from scratch Ranch Dressing is a blend of pantry spices like garlic powder, onion powder, and dried parsley. The key ingredient in Ranch Dressing to give it that signature ranch flavor is dill weed. This Homemade Ranch Dressing recipe uses dried dill to make it extra easy to make whenever you are craving it. You can always swap in fresh dill for bolder dill flavor. That includes all the ingredients, swap in fresh garlic cloves for dried garlic or any other fresh seasoning you prefer.

You can store the spices for your Homemade Ranch Dressing recipe separately and then mix it with mayonnaise and sour cream when you are ready to serve the ranch dressing. You could also double or triple the spice blend and then substitute 2 tablespoons dry ranch dressing spices for a store-bought ranch dressing mix. Ranch dressing mix can kept fresh in the pantry for up to a year or in the freezer indefinitely as long as it’s in a moisture-free container!

  • 1 cup (240mls) of fat free greek yogurt
  • 1 cup (240mls) of mayonnaise OR another cup of fat free greek yogurt + 1 Tbsp of olive oil
  • Juice of 1 large lemon
  • 2 tsp dijon mustard
  • 2 Tbsp dried dill
  • 2 Tbsp dried chives
  • 2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp white wine vinegar
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp dried parsley
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • Optional : milk, to thin it out
  1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl.
  2. If your ranch is very thick (possible with very thick greek yogurt) and you want a more pourable texture, add some milk until you achieve the right texture.
  3. Refrigerate for as long as you can before serving to allow the flavors to develop, at least 2 hours.

In addition to the chipotle peppers, a squeeze of fresh lime and a little cilantro add a nice and zesty touch, rounding out the dressing perfectly.

WHAT ARE CHIPOTLE PEPPERS?

Chipotles are dried smoked jalapeños, but Chipotles in Adobo are dried, smoked jalapeños that come fully drenched in Adobo Sauce. The spice is not overwhelming, but if you are sensitive to spicy foods, consider steering clear of them.

Adobo Sauce is made up mostly of ingredients like chili powder, tomatoes, vinegar, garlic, peppercorns, cumin…and the list goes on. It’s for this reason, we’re grateful for the ever-so convenient Chipotles in Adobo.

Chipotle peppers add a smoky, tangy vibe to dishes and especially to condiments. Eh-mmmmm, Chipotle Ranch Dressing, anyone?

Southwest Chipotle Ranch

Hi there, hello, happy Sunday! This is gonna be a super duper quick post because I&rsquove had a pretty busy week traveling and celebrating my niece and her GOLDEN BIRTHDAY these past couple days. It&rsquos nice to get away, but I am starting to miss home a bit. (Even the laundry! I&rsquom just kidding. That&rsquoll never happen.) I do sort of miss Eric though. He had to stay behind and hold down the fort with our two dogs. I wasn&rsquot going to post this weekend, but because I didn&rsquot getcha a recipe post out last weekend I figured I&rsquod better get to it. On Instagram the other night, I posted a poll asking if you&rsquod like me to post either this Southwest Chipotle Ranch or a recipe for Cilantro Lime Rice. It was a pretty close call, but this delicious ranch with a kick won by a few hundred votes. Y&rsquoall made it extra easy on me because this recipe is cinch. You literally just throw a bunch of stuff either in a bowl (if using an immersion blender) or a blender. You can use either one. I tend to use the immersion blender a lot more for simple stuff like this because it does the same job as a big bulky blender and the little immersion blender adapter thing is quicker to clean. If you&rsquore wondering, yes, 98% of my decisions are based on how many dishes I will be doing later. Pay attention a little when you&rsquore blending up this good stuff because using the immersion blender may result in just a few flying drops of ranch, but nothing disastrous or anything.

Anyhow, Back to the this Southwest Chipotle Ranch. Eric has been buggin&rsquo me to make a spicy ranch forever and a day now. I don&rsquot really know why I kept putting it off. I just add things to my to do list and 99% of the time they never get completed. (I know it&rsquos not just me, right?) Finally, Eric threatened to make it himself and that&rsquos where I stepped in. Ha! Ya&rsquoll don&rsquot know this, but Eric is kind of hilarious when it comes to anything having to do with the kitchen and cooking. He claims he has no idea what he&rsquos doing, but I think he just puts on an act so that I&rsquoll do it. It&rsquos true I tend to baby him when it comes to this, but oh well. I enjoy cooking for him. The other night he had some super random stuff out on the counter and said, &ldquoI&rsquom going to make some spicy ranch- if you won&rsquot.&rdquo You guys, I&rsquom not even going to talk about what he had out on the counter, but I put it all away and whipped this up. It&rsquos pretty dang delicious and I think you&rsquoll love it! Eric ate the entire jar (just over 2 cups worth) within a day, so I think we all can guess his thoughts on it. You can add this to countless things like raw veggies, tacos, salads, burrito bowls, pizza, baked potatoes, and/or egg sandwiches (YES! EGG SANDWICHES! REALLY AMAZING!) to take things to next level delicious. This is such a versatile condiment to have on hand. It&rsquos a new staple in our fridge, for sure!

Let&rsquos get in the kitchen and I&rsquoll show you literally like 4 pictures because this is so easy it&rsquos ridiculous

Grab a bowl and add 1 cup of buttermilk, 1 cup of non fat greek yogurt, 1/4 cup light mayo, 1 tsp cumin, 1 packet ranch dressing seasoning mix.

Grab can of these guys. You can find&rsquom in any grocery store. There&rsquos usually three or four different brands, and I grab any ol&rsquo brand. Make sure they are in adobo sauce because you&rsquoll need like a teaspoon of the sauce. I&rsquom not sure if they are even availble without the sauce because I&rsquove never see them, but just make sure there&rsquos sauce. I almost always have a few cans of these in the pantry to add a &ldquosmoky spicy&rdquo flavor to things. They are great to have on hand!

Here&rsquos what they look like just incase you&rsquove never really worked with these. Now, these babies will bring the heat to the dressing. I use one pepper plus one teaspoon of the sauce. I&rsquom going to write the recipe to only use half of a pepper because Eric and I handle spice VERY well so I don&rsquot want this to be too spicy for the average person. My best advice? Start with a half of a pepper and a teaspoon of adobo sauce. If you think you want more heat add the other half&rsquoa pepper. You can always add more, you can&rsquot add less.

I know you&rsquore going to have leftover peppers. Pop&rsquom in a freezer baggie and throw&rsquom in the freezer. They&rsquoll stay good in there for bout three months. You can also use them in a few recipes that I have coming to the blog this month. I&rsquom so excited to share them with ya!

Moving on from the peppers. Geesh, there was a lot to say about one tiny pepper. Phew! Let&rsquos juice one lime and pour that into the mix. Here&rsquos a lil tip to get the most juice out of your lime. Microwave it for about 20 seconds, cut it in half, then juice it. Works every time!

Now blend everything with an immersion blender. (This can also be blended in a blender or food processor- whatever you fancy!)

This might be the most boring photo I have ever taken in my life, but man this stuff is good and it adds so much flavor to sooo many things.

Pour this stuff in a jar, keep it in your fridge, and put in on, like, literally everything.

This Yogurt Sauce Makes Everything Better

I can't think of a single dish that wouldn't be improved by yogurt sauce. You know that now eye roll-inducing gag from My Big Fat Greek Wedding in which the father thinks that Windex is the cure for pretty much everything? That's how I feel about yogurt sauce, aka anything in which salt and other ingredients (often an acid like fresh lemon juice) are mixed with plain (non-flavored) Greek yogurt. (Extra points for the rich, full-fat stuff.)

Yogurt sauce is great cheap trick for livening up a bunch of leftovers—from yesterday's grain salad to the weekend's fritatta—or even whatever wilty, seen-better-days veggies that happen to be hanging around in your fridge waiting to be roasted or stir-fried. Or, yes, you can get fancier and use yogurt sauce on grilled lamb chops, crispy-skinned salmon fillets, and basically anything involving pita. And, because I have such deep affinity for the stuff, I have a tendency to spoon it over dishes that other people might claim are a bridge too far. Pasta? I've yogurt-sauced it. A dollop on some chicken tacos? Not mad about it. A drizzle over some avocado toast? Yes, please

This falafel fritter recipe uses yogurt sauce in its simplest form: lemon juice, salt, pepper. There's literally nothing to master. You just stir and eat.

From there, try different riffs. Grated garlic is a good start. I'm definitely in support of some dairy-on-dairy action by mashing some feta cheese into the sauce. Fresh herbs like chives, parsley, mint, or cilantro are always welcome. Warmer spices like paprika or cumin are invited as well. Go crazy: Add a jalapeño or scallions. Mustard should join the party too. Once you've really mastered things, try the recipe pictured above.

If the sauce feels to thick, thin it with a little water. And if you want to just eat it straight from the bowl and call that dinner, we support you.
